Boostmania: how much did Betclic really lose?

Boostmania is an exceptional event offered by the operator Betclic for the period from 18 to 30 April. The aim of this promotional event was to offer bettors very lucrative boosted bets. Was this a successful seduction operation for the operator?

Boostmania - a bettor's dream

Boosted betting all day on all sports at unbeatable odds. This is how punters would sum up the event offered by Betclic.

Every day from 18 to 30 April, Betclic offered its customers a dozen boosted bets per day, i.e. more than 120 bets over 12 days. In a dedicated tab Boost Mania, the bettor could find numerous bets every day.

The boosts offered by Betclic had a maximum bet limit of €10 or €20 for some and a specific duration. The bettor therefore had to stay alert and visit the application regularly so as not to miss any of the opportunities offered by the operator.

How much did the punter win?

During the 12-day period, Betclic will have offered a total of 123 bets, mostly on football, tennis and basketball. Some sports that are usually less popular with punters will still have had their bets boosted, such as hockey, rugby, cycling, MMA and motor sports.

Of these 123 boosted bets some are still in progress as they are long term bets on competition winners (6 in total), so out of 117 settled bets we count :

  • 64 winning bets
  • 51 loosing bets
  • 2 bets refunded

If the punter managed to play all 123 bets then he would end up with a profit of €417 taking into account that he would have had to play the sum of €1,760 (€60 in progress).

We have calculated some interesting statistics for you:

  • Success rate: 52.03%.
  • ROC (Return on Capital): 35.70% (assuming €1000 start-up capital)
  • ROI (Return on Investment): 23.69%.
  • Average odd: 2.51
  • Biggest winning streak: 6 bets in a row
  • Longest losing streak: 6 bets in a row
  • MDD (Max Draw Down) : 31.44%
  • Average win per bet: +€3.56

Were all bets good?

Despite the small volume (123 bets) we have nevertheless been keen to highlight some trends to try and distinguish the bets that have made the most money for punters. Of course these results are not to be taken for granted and are not applicable to any other investment history or strategy, they are specific to the data analysed here.

Are the basic fair odds really 1.25?

Depending on the odds

We are going to look at the profits made according to the odds proposed by the bookmaker, for that we split our sample in 3 :

  • For odds below 2.00 the profit is €37.50 (21 bets)
  • For odds between 2.00 and 2.99 the profit is €342.50 (73 bets)
  • For odds above 3.00 the profit is €22.50 (23 bets)

In the end we don't notice big differences between the rating bands even if the profitability seems more interesting for reasonable odds that are worth playing (between 2 and 3).

Depending on the stakes

If we decide to split the balance sheet in two with the profits for the €10 boosted odds on one side and the profits for the €20 boosted odds on the other we would get :

  • €206 profit for €20 bets
  • €198 profit for €10 bets

We notice that the profits are almost identical knowing that we had as many bets at 10€ as at 20€ but we conclude that in terms of profitability the bets at 10€ were therefore twice as profitable.

Depending on the sport

It is difficult to draw conclusions on a small sample of data and even more so when some sports do not exceed 10 bets.

Depending on the value

For the more discerning betor the best strategy is to find out if the bet offers enough value to be played. However, we have already written an article that deals perfectly with this aspect so we invite you to read it: Boosted odds: 3 tips to avoid falling into the trap.

Can we say that Betclic lost money?

From a financial point of view and focusing only on the balance sheet of the boosted odds offered over the period, the answer is clearly : YES. Every bettor even with a catastrophic management or a questionable selection choice logically ended the boostmania with more money than at the beginning of it.

Did all the punters play the 123 boosts maybe not but in any case Betclic's objective was not to finish the Boostmania in the positive and for that several reasons.

First of all it is a well disguised marketing move. Betclic knew very well that by offering such bets it could largely distinguish itself from the competition. The event was widely covered on social networks and many tipsters relayed the CM's posts.

The event was well thought out and prepared in advance as Betclic has offered very few boosted odds since the World Cup. They preferred the option of hitting hard over 12 days rather than offering 2 or 3 boosted odds per week for the first 17 calendar weeks.

Why? Simply for accounting reasons. Bookmakers have to report to the ANJ at the end of each quarter and Betclic probably had enough margin (January to April) to prepare its seduction operation serenely.

Moreover, sports betting remains an addictive game and even in the absence of strategies some players will continue to play and for the most part lose money. In the end, for a large part of its customers, Betclic will sooner or later recover the losses of its players.

When will Boostmania return?

Unfortunately the return of Boostmania has no precise date, nobody even knows if the operation will be renewed for a second season.

What is certain is that Betclic will always have to stand out from the competition by renewing its offers and promotions to convince new players to join its platform.

So even if boostmania does not make a comeback, we are sure that Betclic will be able to be inventive to seduce the hearts of its players again with new events.

How will other operators react?

It must be said that the Boostmania marketing stunt was a masterstroke by Betclic as the buzz was there.

Thanks to the Tweet Binder tool we were able to measure the impact of boostmania on Twitter alone and over the last 7 days we counted more than 1200 tweets with the hastag Boostmania. You can find the full report right here: Full analysis.

It should be noted that operators are obliged to declare their profits at the end of the quarter to the institutions, which still leaves time (April-June) for some to react. We noted the very nice boosted odds of Winamax at the end of the year in the fight with Betclic. But as for the historical operator Unibet only one real boosted odds last month (the first of the year!).

Clearly with this event Betclic is now largely among the top bookmakers to have in its possession. The rest of the operators will have to redouble their efforts if they want to recover the market share acquired by Betclic.

The community's opinion

In the Apprenti Parieur's Telegram we asked the betting community for their thoughts on boostmania and here are their opinions.

Capture decran 2023 05 08 a 11.01.13

For the most part, the punters enjoyed this event (certainly correlated with the positive results of the boosted odds) and few people were not interested and did not have this operator (which proves the effectiveness of Betclic's marketing).

Obviously we are not sponsored by Betclic in any way to write this article but we thought it appropriate to share our feedback on Boostmania.

In the end, boostmania was profitable for punters and many took the opportunity to make money in a short period. An event that allowed only 3% of players to lose during the two weeks.
